There are so many varying opinions about beer and whether or not it really tastes good. But did you know that there is some real science behind beer and our opinions of the flavor? It’s true! For those who don’t enjoy the taste of beer, it means that your bitter taste triggers are a bit stronger than that of others. And, this trigger is actually designed to keep you from consuming dangerous food and drink.

This said, would you try harder to like beer if you knew that it was actually good for you? Yes, this is a fact too. There have been oodles of studies done that shows that beer actually comes with some health benefits. It may seem like a bit of a conundrum to know that the very substance that our bodies may be telling us is dangerous, is actually good for us when consumed in safe moderation. So for those who allow themselves to indulge in a beer a day, it could help keep the doctor away.

7  Fun Facts About Health Benefits of Beer

  1. Beer has as many antioxidants as wine. Though the specific antioxidants are a bit different due to the differing flavonoids in barley and hops, the antioxidants are still in there. Not only that, but beer contains more protein and vitamin B than wine too. And if you are a vitamin junkie, you’ll love knowing that beer also contains iron, calcium, fiber, and phosphates.
  2. Beer can prevent painful kidney stones. If you have ever had the unfortunate experience of suffering from a kidney stone, you know that you never want to suffer that anguish again. Though consuming excessive amounts of alcohol can cause kidney stones, beer that is consumed in moderation can actually lower your risk. According to the American Addiction Centers, beer, white wine, and red wine can all contribute to a lessened risk of the development of kidney stones.
  3. Beer is good for your bad cholesterol. A high LDL (low-density lipoproteins) can lead to a buildup of cholesterol in your arteries, which can increase your risk for coronary artery disease. Yet, beer contains soluble fiber. When you increase your intake of soluble fiber, it can promote healthy blood-sugar and blood-cholesterol levels.
  4. Beer is good for your heart. With a lower risk of coronary artery disease tied to the consumption of beer in healthy moderation, you will have a lesser risk of heart attack, stroke, or heart disease.
  5. Beer builds stronger bones. Beer contains silicon which is believed to slow the prevalence of bone loss, and can also help you to avoid the development of osteoporosis. Beers that contain higher quantities of malted barley and hops are excellent sources of silicon. Pale ales have higher levels of silicon. Non-alcoholic beers, wheat beers, and light lagers have lower levels of silicon.
  6. Beer is a stress reducer. We’re not talking about the stress relief that comes from hanging out with your friends and kicking back a few beers. Two glasses of beer a day is actually good for your stress levels. However, in some cases, beer can be linked to higher levels of anxiety and depression, so it important that you monitor who beer makes you feel, and adjust your habits.
  7. Beer can improve memory and cognitive function. Yes, you get a two-fer deal on this one. Not only will beer help you remember things better, but it can make your brain more effective. Related to this, beer can also help protect our bodies from the onset of dementia.
Of course, with any alcohol consumption, it is important that it is enjoyed in moderation. However, when you drink responsibly, it is great to know that you may also be doing some good for your body while you are having a good time!
